Absolute/Relative
Only the Absolute is. Everything exists in relation to it.
Wisdom suggests that nothing be added to the first sentence. But men and women are not wise. So we tend to add to it. First, we want to give it a name. Indeed, personally, as a deeply religious person, my name for the Absolute is God. And I leave others the right to call it as they wish -- even not-God.
Then, unwise as we are, we try to give all sorts of attributes to the Absolute. Provided it is understood that this is an affair of the heart, rather then the mind, there is no danger in the exercise. The end result is, and has to be, that the God/Man relation is strictly personal -- with each one of us.
Problems arise as soon as we confuse the Absolute with such human concepts as absolute Truth, Beauty, Justice. Perhaps the best way to minimize the difficulties is to remember, with Benedetto Croce, that these are human, dialectical concepts: there is no truth without falsity, no beauty without ugliness, no justice without injustice.
The Visitor to this site will not find abstract discussions of these or other issues. The attempt here is only to understand the most basic simple things. Since I believe it is possible, to try to understand Relationalism is our goal, namely, the position occupied by everything so that it relates to everything else.
